Description of the Programme:

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences in collaboration with Ruth Cohn Institute for Theme Centered Interaction (TCI)-International, Berlin, announces  the second batch of its workshop training program   in Professional and Personal Leadership. This Program is based on a group leading method called Theme Centered Interaction. Applications for this program are open from Jan 23 – March 25, 2017. The program begins on June 14, 2017, and will run through till end of November 2018. It is a nonresidential modular format involving 8 workshops spread over 18 months. A total of 36 days of workshop contact and a short self reflective thesis are  mandatory components. The program is targeted at  social and development workers, community workers, teachers, trainers, team leaders and managers, counsellors, soft skills professionals and all those interested in personal and professional development. Training participants will be awarded two certificates: An International Certificate in the training methodology TCI from Ruth Cohn Institute for TCI, Berlin. Also a Certificate from TISS for Professional and Personal Leadership. For details of the Program see below.

 

Training Elements

The training comprises of the following elements:

  • an introductory workshop (3 days)

  • 6 workshops of 5 days each. For learning TCI method (3 workshops) and personality courses (3 workshops)

  • a short written thesis

  • evaluation / recommendation from teachers team

  • a concluding workshop (3 days)

Making sense of my Biography

This workshop will look into structures and patterns of personality, biography, personality types, values, body language and expression, aspirations and dreams.

 

 

Workshop 2 (Method 1):

Doing TCI… Making a well running team

This workshop will focus on the 4 factor model of TCI, what is a theme, the significance of I, WE and IT. The phases of a groups and structures and their outcomes for working in groups. It will look at the various elements that make a good team.

 

Workshop 3 (Personality 2):

Finding my real strength

Between boundaries of society and my dreams of life, dependency, independence and autonomy, the decision space (inter-dependency). My limitations and strengths (resources) and cooperative action. The power of WE.

 

Workshop 4 (Method 2):

Leading you – leading me.

Elements of Leading with TCI

The “art of leading” with TCI by participating, encouraging leadership. The real leader is…the THEME (the right task). Leading democratic, ethical, value based groups.

 

Workshop 5 (Method 3 ):

I lead. You also lead. What now?

Disturbances and conflicts. We look at them as normal and learn how to cope with them to prevent crisis. (the dynamic balance). How to deal with minorities. Non-violent approach to difference. Handling diversity and competition.

 

Workshop 6 (Personality 3):

Being an authentic and generative Leader

Chairpersonship and professionalism, 'I am my own chairperson but I am not the only one'. Accountability and Responsibility. Selective Authenticity, Creativity and enjoying myself and my role in society/organisations. Authentic self-presentation.

 

Concluding Workshop:

Making Closures and Celebrating

 

The full program will be conducted over a period of 18 months. Based on RCI standards (1 course = 18 sessions), it will be conducted in modular format with 8 workshops as the contact spaces for learning TCI basics. The introductory and concluding workshop (each 9 sessions of 90 minutes) will be spread over three days. The 6 Method and Personality workshops will consist of 18 sessions of 90 minutes each spread over 5 days. Total period of contact teaching / learning (without additional WS) will be 36 days.

Additional /Optional workshops may be planned as per need and funds available.

TCI workshops are process oriented without a set curriculum. The curriculum perspective is delivered in workshop style and builds on participants motivations and assessments of their learning needs and existential concerns. The focus in this program is on personality and leadership development and not on any academic themes. No lectures are involved. Even when reading materials are provided to participants our emphasis is not on reading but on experiential learning. It is therefore not presented in a regular format of courses and credits. The methods we use are interactive, conversational with roleplays, theatre, creative expressions, art, meditation, body work etc.

TCI workshops are only partially planned in their details and are not predictable since process orientation and living learning require here and now to be important in leaders assessment of participants needs. TCI workshop plans are kept aside for an evolving structure and group process.

The actual workshops will be planned and executed basing on the combined needs of the enlisted group in terms of the theme on professional and personal leadership. The given plan is illustrative of what 6 thematic basic training workshops may focus on.

Evaluation

This program will have no examinations for conferment of certification. Attendance in all workshops is mandatory. The participants wil be required to work on a self -reflexive thesis of approxiately 5000 words focusing on their self-evaluation of group learning/group processes/personal adaptation of TCI etc. The topic will be decided in consultation with the teachers. A recommendation based on this submission and personal evaluation of the teacher will lead to the certification .

Scope

Facilitating and leading groups according to the TCI concept permits a style of leadership that combines competence, motivation, mutual esteem and goal orientation. It is appropriate for all areas in which people need to work together successfully in all kinds of teams and groups - e.g. management, education, social work counselling and teaching. TCI is also helpful for people, who wish to use it to structure their personal lives creatively.

We expect professionals such as trainers, social workers, development sector workers, counsellors, teachers etc. will enroll for this program. Useful for self-development and leadership development in all professional settings, it will attract others too.

 

Recruitment

Recruitment will be done through a submission of interest of applicants on first come first basis. A total recruitment of 25 candidates will be done. The Program will not be conducted without 15 confirmed participants.

 

Program Fees

 

Rs 85,000 ( Eighty Five Thousand only) to be paid in two installments. Rs 55,000 at the beginning of the program and Rs 30,000 to be paid by November 1, 2017. These charges are inclusive of tution fee, identity card, development fund and convocation charges.

What is TCI?

TCI is a concept for working with groups and teams. It provides a conceptual design for ethical living and practice in all professional settings. It has many uses. For example:

  • Leading and directing organizations, institutions and employees

  • Democratic teaching and learning in schools, colleges and universities including facilitating continuing and adult education

  • Counselling and Coaching

 

During the past 30 years the concept of Theme Centred Interaction (TCI) has spread rapidly, and it is one of the most widely used methods in the areas of Humanistic Psychology and Education in Europe. Tata Institute of Social Sciences, in partnership with Ruth Cohn Institute International, Berlin, is offering a training in Theme Centred Interaction at its Mumbai Campus. The program grooms individuals and encourages the development of thematic, social and individual competence to work and interact in groups in order to attend to group tasks and goals in a balanced and holistic manner. It is a valuable program for development of personal and

professional leadership, especially in the social sector.

 

How does TCI work?

TCI involves the attentive awareness of oneself and others in personal and in professional contexts; the strengthening of interdependence and autonomy in relationships; imparting knowledge in a lively way and involving participants in this process; integrating the demands of the working task with a regard for the individual and for interpersonal relationships. It promotes leading discussions in a spirit of lively communication, thereby promoting cooperation rather than rivalry. TCI emphasizes both methodical skills and personal authenticity. It recognizes the equal importance of the individual, the collective and the Globe. Individuals are seen holistically, recognising the three dimensions of body, soul and mind. This allows for a working atmosphere that frees personal motivation and creative potentials of all individuals in a group or team. Individual disturbances are not disregarded. But used for improving cooperation in an environment of trust thus making a climate of esteem and mutual respect possible. TCI is not just a method, but also a philosophy.

 

Ruth Cohn and Foundations of TCI

The development of TCI must be seen in light of its founder Dr. Ruth C. Cohn and her biography. Ruth Cohn, a Jew born in the times of war and its aftermath (27.8.1912 to 30.1.2010), studied Psychoanalysis in Zürich. She specifically focussed on the psychoanalysts S. Freud, H.S. Sullivan, and A.Adler. She was philosophically influenced by the optimistic American brand of Existentialism. Additional impulses came from reform pedagogy and body therapy.

 

She transformed her existential experiences (persecution, emigration) into the hope of supporting humane action in all areas of society by strengthening self-confidence combined with a vital system of values. TCI can thus be seen as a part of the humanistic psychology movement that regarded itself as being situated between Psychoanalysis on the one side and Behaviorism on the other. She was particularly impressed with the founder of Gestalt therapy, Fritz Perls, and with Carl Rogers, who developed client-centered therapy, and with the group therapist, Asya Kadis."From the treatment of individuals to a pedagogy for everyone" is the sub-title of her book "Von der Psychoanalyse zur Themenzentrierten Interaktion" that was published in German in 1975. She distanced herself from exclusive individual treatment, moving to a democratic pedagogic approach. In the past few years TCI has, in addition to its "classical" uses (in the areas of Psychotherapy, Pedagogy, Social Work) made in-roads into organizational, team and personal development. This ties in with the fact that, in the early 60s, Ruth Cohn began to work using her concept in various organizations in industry. Currently TCI continues to be developed through research in the fields of pedagogy and social work.

 

What are the uses of TCI? For whom is TCI?

Balancing individual needs and aspirations in the group and working cooperatively and democratically is a challenge for all leaders. Facilitating and leading groups according to the TCI concept permits a style of leadership that combines competence, motivation, mutual esteem and goal orientation. The TCI training program is intended to have a lasting effect, in the knowledge that quick successes are often unrealistic. It works on the deep psyche and attempts to influence attitudes. Training in TCI aims to assist people to present and structure their aspirations, motivations and interests in a responsible and self-determined way and to use resources creatively and ethically. In this method there is regard for minorities and people who think differently are treated with respect.

TCI is useful for democratic, responsible and ethical group leading whether it is teams, organizations or various kinds of institutions. It is appropriate for all areas in which people need to work together successfully in all kinds of teams and groups - e.g. management, education, social work. TCI is also helpful for people, who desire to use it to structure their personal lives creatively.

Goals and objectives of TCI training Program

Basic training in TCI leads to the “Certificate of Basic Training in TCI”. A TCI group leader holding a certificate has the ability to introduce and experiment with basic elements of the group leading using the method and techniques of Theme Centred Interaction when leading groups in his/her professional field. He/she is expected to:

  • consciously further develop his/her own personality in the context of leading groups with TCI,

  • become acquainted with TCI- methods and didactics,

  • learn the basics of TCI and develop the capacity to apply TCI attitudes and methods to his/her group work,

  • study his/her own professional development and become capable of reflecting on his/her own role in or in relation to organizations / institutions.

Information on Ruth Cohn Institute for TCI-International (RCI)

The Ruth Cohn Institute for TCI – International, based in Berlin/Germany and Basel/Switzerland, is an international organization that secures the quality of training of TCI. RCI functions as an umbrella organization for 19 regional and professionally oriented organizations in which people are engaged in teaching and learning using TCI philosophy and method in various professional settings. The origins of RCI lie in 1966 when it was founded in New York as the "Workshop Institute for Living-Learning (WILL)". In 1972 WILL Europe was founded in Switzerland. The founder, Dr. Dr. h.c. Ruth C. Cohn, authorized the use of her name for the training institute for TCI in the year 2002. Quality is maintained by means of regular, continuing education and professional exchange on an international level through accredited instructors of RCI International.

RCI International functions to promote and maintain international contact among its member organizations; develop and circulate TCI; and maintain TCI training standards.

Its activities are: organization of basic and advanced training seminars/ workshops; maintaining an arbitration board, an international training committee, a graduation committee. It regularly publishes a TCI journal. It also runs special projects for teaching and learning with target groups such as young adults etc.
